If you’ve ever visited Japan in summer, you probably know just how “mushi atsui” (hot and humid) the weather can feel. From June to August, Japan experiences intense heat and humidity, with the hottest period usually occurring from late July through August.
Temperatures vary by region, but major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nagoya often reach 31–35°C with temperatures occasionally approaching or exceeding 40°C! Combined with Japan’s high humidity, the heat can feel even more intense, especially when sightseeing, walking outdoors, or spending long hours under the sun.
Thankfully, Japan has plenty of smart solutions to help you stay cool, comfortable, and protected during the summer season. From UV protection and cooling essentials to refreshing beauty products, these summer must-haves are perfect to keep in your travel bag.
1. Sunscreen

Biore UV × Stray Kids 2026
I can't stress this enough: sunscreen is the most important step in your summer skincare routine. Scientific studies have shown that regular sunscreen use helps reduce the risk of skin cancer and protects against premature signs of aging caused by UV exposure. Research has found that consistent sunscreen use can lower the risk of melanoma and other types of skin cancer while helping protect skin from long-term sun damage.
Lightweight Japanese sunscreens are especially popular because they provide strong UV protection without feeling heavy or sticky. Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF50+ PA++++ is a great everyday option, featuring a lightweight gel-like texture that absorbs quickly and feels comfortable even in humid weather. It's also available in mist for on-the-go reapplication.
Your lips also need protection from the sun. An SPF lip balm helps moisturize delicate lip skin while providing daily UV protection.
2. UV Umbrella
Unlike regular umbrellas, UV parasols are specially designed to block harmful UV rays and help reduce heat exposure while walking outdoors. Many feature a black inner lining that helps absorb and block sunlight, keeping you feeling cooler compared to using a regular umbrella.
You can easily find UV umbrellas at convenience stores, Don Quijote, drugstores, and department stores throughout Japan.
3. UV Protection Clothing

UV-blocking clothing is another popular way to protect yourself from Japan’s strong summer sunlight. Lightweight UV-cut jackets, arm sleeves, and breathable long-sleeve tops are commonly worn for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
Uniqlo’s AIRism UV Protection Collection is especially popular because the fabric is lightweight, comfortable, and designed for hot weather. UV protection clothing is a great option for travelers who plan to spend long hours outdoors while exploring cities, parks, or attractions.
4. Portable Electric Fan, Neck Cooler, and Hand Fan
Portable fans and neck coolers have become summer essentials in Japan. Many newer models now come with built-in cooling plates that provide a cooling sensation. While portable fans cannot lower the actual temperature of hot summer air, the airflow can still help you feel more comfortable.
For a hands-free option, neck coolers are another convenient choice. Many reusable neck coolers are designed to maintain a cool temperature around 22–24°C for approximately 90–120 minutes, depending on the product and outdoor conditions. They can be quickly chilled in ice water or a refrigerator, making them easy to reuse throughout the day.
If you prefer a more traditional option, Japanese uchiwa (flat fans) and sensu (folding fans) are also widely available. They are lightweight, easy to carry, and come in many beautiful Japanese designs, making them both practical cooling items and memorable souvenirs.
5. Cooling Body Wipes
Cooling wipes are one of the easiest ways to refresh yourself after sweating. Products like Bioré Cooling Body Wipes provide an instant cooling sensation, helping lower the perceived skin temperature by up to 3°C while removing sweat and stickiness. They are perfect to keep in your bag for sightseeing, outdoor activities, or whenever you need a quick refresh.
6. Hydration Drinks
While water is important, electrolyte drinks can also help replace minerals lost through sweating. In Japan, popular options like Pocari Sweat and Aquarius are widely available at convenience stores and vending machines.

Tip: Freeze Pocari Sweat Jelly before heading out! it works like a portable cooler and a refreshing treat at the same time!
7. Cooling Neck Towel or Tenugui
Carrying a cool towel or traditional tenugui is a handy way to stay comfortable during Japan’s hot summer months. Made from lightweight cotton, tenugui are breathable, gentle on the skin, and comfortable to use even in humid weather.
Unlike regular towels, tenugui are highly absorbent, making them useful for wiping sweat, drying hands, or keeping refreshed while sightseeing. Their unsewn edges allow them to dry quickly, which helps prevent the towel from staying damp throughout the day.
Available in a wide variety of seasonal patterns and traditional Japanese designs, tenugui are not only a practical summer travel essential but also make a unique and lightweight souvenir from Japan.
8. Dry Shampoo

Humidity can make hair feel heavy, oily, and difficult to manage. I always keep dry shampoo sheets in my bag. It's my go-to favorite and a lifesaver whenever my hair needs a quick refresh. Dry shampoo sheets are especially convenient when traveling because they take up little space and help freshen up your hair without water.
I also can't help but recommend Orbis Hair Milk because it makes my hair feel soft, smooth, and slightly bouncy! It’s a great lightweight treatment for keeping hair manageable. Check out my guide on how to use Orbis Essence in Hair Milk for soft, lustrous hair.
9. Summer Makeup Essentials

As someone who likes wearing makeup, I know how important it is to keep your makeup looking fresh and in place throughout the day. Long-lasting makeup products and a good setting spray and can make a big difference during hot and humid weather.
For a lightweight, tone up primer, Decorté Sun Shelter Tone Up CC UV Primer SPF50+ helps create a healthy, bright-looking base. For fpundation, Shiseido Anessa All-in-One Beauty Pact UV Powder Foundation SPF50+ is a great option because it combines coverage with UV protection. A lightweight face powder like Club Suppin Powder is also convenient for touch-ups, helping reduce shine and maintain a fresh-looking complexion throughout the day.
For eye makeup, waterproof products are especially useful in summer. Kiss Me Heroine Make Mascara Super Waterproof and Love Liner Long-Lasting Liquid Waterproof Eyeliner are my personal faorites and popular choices because they help prevent smudging. Kiss Me Heroine Make eyeliners are also a good option, but I personally just love Love Liner’s subtle brown shades and smooth texture. They create a softer, more natural-looking definition that is perfect for everyday summer makeup.
10. Insect Repellent Wipes

Summer in Japan also means mosquitoes and other insects, especially in parks, gardens, temples, and areas near rivers or forests. For some reason, mosquitoes always seem to find me LOL so carrying insect repellent sheets or spray is something I never forget to pack in my travel kit.
Enjoy Japan’s Summer!
If I were to choose just three items from this list, I would definitely pick sunscreen, cooling wipes, and Pocari Sweat Jelly Drink. Freezing the jelly drink before heading out is one of my favorite summer tips! It works like a mini cooler in your bag, and as it slowly melts, you can enjoy a refreshing, icy treat.
Traveling in Japan during summer is an unforgettable experience, filled with the excitement of fireworks and festivals, delicious seasonal foods, and the energy of vibrant city life. Even during the brutally hot days of the season, the unique atmosphere and charm of summer in Japan make it worth experiencing. While the heat and humidity can be challenging, a little preparation can make your trip much more comfortable and enjoyable.
Pack smart, stay cool, and enjoy your summer in Japan!
